CANDIDATE STATEMENTS
LUKE PARR, co-curricular prefect
“I am someone who really loves to watch his peers perform, whether that be sports or arts. I want to work to increase attendance to students extra-curricular events. I plan to work with the school to better promote the times and places of different events, such as games or shows.”
ALICE MIHAS, CO-CURRICULAR PREFECT
“I am drawn to the Co-Curricular Prefect position due to its ability to unite and strengthen our community. I would bring a diverse range of perspectives to this position because I am extremely involved in Latin arts and athletics as I have been in the Co-Curricular role for a year now. Additionally, I am a part of both improv and multiple sports teams at Latin, therefore, I have lots of insight into how extra-curricular at Latin can be improved. Over the past few years, our community has been through a lot, so if elected as Co-Curricular Prefect, I will strive to bring our community together through extra-curricular events such as more large school-wide sporting events and pep rallies.”
ARMAAN SHAH, SENIOR PREFECT
“I am hoping to serve as Senior Prefect because the position has the opportunity to ensure Student Government does its job in advocating for the student body and representing all students. Currently, Student Gov. mainly serves as a “party planning committee,” which is still important to maintain because our school spirit rests on many of these events; however, students need access to the administration more than ever. Student Government must be the bridge between these two essential populations at Latin. Within Student Government, I will establish policies that hold all representatives—myself included—accountable (in terms of attendance, initiatives, etc.).”
ZUHAIR ALSIKAFI, JUNIOR PREFECT
“I want to bring the Latin community closer together by trying to increase school spirit. Latin’s sports teams have always had a sports shop (BSN) where athletes had the opportunity to purchase apparel for their team. However, this year, there was no BSN so parents and captains often found themselves struggling to organize apparel for their teams. The enthusiasm shown by these teams is something that truly makes Latin special and our sports teams shouldn’t have to jump hurdles to foster school spirit. This upcoming school year I want BSN to return and strengthen our community.”
CESCA CAMPISE, SENIOR PREFECT
“This school has a problem. You don't have me as leader. Choosing Cesca Campise as the senior prefect (top dog) would make everyone's lives blissful. I am strong, I've been hitting the gym (DM me @cescacampise on insta for my super tough and buff arm workout,). I have an idea, a sensational notion, vote me. If you vote me, you'll be exposed to my wonderful ideas, such as.... 1. love. i am the embodiment of love. Back in freshman year, I didn't love my homeroom, but now, I do. Love, love to all. Love love love. I've got a couple more ideas but so far that's all I can write down.”
AVA COLE, SOCIAL PREFECT
“I would be great for social prefect because I have had a lot of experience planning events given that I was on student government in 8th grade and a grade rep freshman year. I have always loved planning things for the other people especially when I see they are having fun, I love being apart of something like that. I want to make the dances and homecoming enjoyable and I want people to look forward to them because I feel like students leave so early. I think that asking people for their ideas so they have a lot of say in the events would be really helpful because then the students themselves can say what they want or don't.”
DIEGO R. MIRANDA, JUNIOR PREFECT
“If I were to be elected as Junior Prefect I would bring diversity and leadership to my position. This would include new ideas and perspectives. Attending Latin during the peak of COVID to now I have seen as well as learned what has worked within our community and was has not. One of the problems that I would want to solve is the trash that is left behind throughout the building. Given that this has been an issue for a while I plan to start the "See Something Say Something" initiative. This would encourage students to be accountable for themselves as well as their peers. Latin is our home so if we work together we will not only create a stronger but cleaner community.”
MICAH OOMMEN, SOCIAL PREFECT
“I would bring fresh, fun, and new ideas to the schools various events if I were to be elected. I want people to look forward to the school events that are set up, and to get rid of the awkward, structureless dances. This will improve the overall enjoyment of the students at the dances, and will make for a better experience for everyone. I will also bring fun new school and grade-wide tournaments for the community to become closer, and to have fun together.”
CALVIN KING, communications PREFECT
“What I bring to the social prefect position, is a fresh face that goes right alongside a caring, loving, funny, charming, easy to talk to, intelligent, and witty mind, that is willing to work towards a positive solution for any problem that comes my way. The new perspectives I would bring is one of a everyday person, I wouldn’t make myself out to be better because I have a leadership role, instead I would be one with the people. I would be able to accomplish finding the middle ground between the students wants and faculty's goals, because I am not shy and will speak up on behalf of the student body. A problem I want to solve is the lack of exciting events. We have a ton of extracurricular events that aren’t always attended heavily, I wan’t to change that and get the bleachers, seats, and stands packed with people. Other social event that aren’t as well attended or looked forward too are Homecoming and Prom. A lot of people feel like these events are boring and they just skip them. I want that to change, similar to the extracurricular activities, I want the hype around these to be so exciting and I want the actual events to live up to the excitement. I will attempt to solve this problem by talking to faculty & staff and being honest about how suffocating the student body with rules about how to be a fan, and the trash venues, music, etc, are the reason no one really looks forward to these things. After they understand that I hope that we could move forward and work with a larger student body to understand the things they feel need to be changed, in order to make these events more exciting.”
MIKAYLA BOYD, SOCIAL PREFECT
“As a member of many minority groups, we are often told to just keep our heads down and go to school for the education, yet we miss out on many opportunities to speak about how we want to shape our Latin experience. One problem I want to stop is the exclusivity of opinions. I promise to offer a space for the minorities to influence our shared values in Latin's diverse community. I will plan culture days where people can display/express all parts of themselves and educate others on their personal experiences to create a stronger understanding between coexisting identities.”
ANTON SCHUSTER, COMMUNICATIONS PREFECT
“I am hoping to serve as Communications Prefect to be a voice of formal or humorise, yet concise communication between the student body and Student Government. As of recently, Student Government has not been as engaged with its student body due our lack of energy and representation during the limited moments of contact and I hope to be a temporary solution to this comprehensive problem. My boldness will be an asset and will be used to lighten the days of the students while establishing a new chapter of Student Government in the upcoming year.”
